The story

Super Meat Boy is a platform game in which players control Meat Boy, a small, dark red, cube-shaped character who must rescue his girlfriend Bandage Girl from the scientist Dr. Fetus. The game is divided into chapters containing over 300 levels, each requiring players to reach the end while avoiding saw blades, crumbling blocks, and other hazards. Players can jump, run on platforms, and slide down walls. Deaths are instant and levels restart immediately with unlimited attempts. Completing levels quickly unlocks harder alternate "dark world" versions, and hidden warp zones contain bonus stages. Additional playable characters with unique abilities can be unlocked through collectibles.

What it’s like

Bright, flat, cartoonish stages in saturated primaries, with a smear of dark red blood left behind every restart, so the screen slowly becomes a record of failure. The sound is a bouncy chiptune-leaning soundtrack, snappy jump blips, and a game-show-style announcer who comments on each attempt with deadpan delight. Movement is tight and immediate: Meat Boy wall-jumps and slides with almost no lag, and every death snaps you back to the start in a fraction of a second. The vibe is frantic, playful and a little mischievous, a gleeful bit of cartoon violence rather than anything grim. Levels are short, so sessions fit a lunch break or a stolen half hour, though the difficulty can turn an evening into a stubborn marathon. Violence is constant but stylised: Meat Boy is cut, sliced and mashed by saws and spikes in goofy, bloody bursts, with no real horror or lingering cruelty. It suits anyone who likes precise, punishing platforming with a comic streak, and people who enjoy the satisfaction of nailing a run after a hundred failed tries.
