The story

Super Stardust HD is a downloadable game for the PlayStation 3 video game console, developed by the Finnish company Housemarque. In Japan it is known as Star Strike HD. Super Stardust HD was the first title with trophy support on the PlayStation 3. Super Stardust HD for the PlayStation3 system is a fully updated version of the classic game Stardust. Your mission is simple: destroy everything in sight! With five highly detailed 3D planets to save, hordes of enemies and asteroids to destroy, and various game play modes, Super Stardust HD presents super intense action. Super Stardust HD is now available in 3D to provide the most immersive gaming experience ever, along with Simulview support in co-op, so you and a friend can view two completely different game views on the same 3D TV screen! 3D TV not required to play Super Stardust HD.

What it’s like

Bright, glowing particle fields against deep black space, with asteroids that shatter into sparks and chunks of colored debris drifting through the frame. The look is glossy and high-contrast, a neon-lit arcade from the era when HD first arrived on consoles, with five detailed planets rendered in saturated color and a fluid 60 fps motion that makes every explosion feel weighty. Sound is a driving custom-soundtrack pulse layered over bright chimes, pings and heavy blasts, so the music you play along to becomes part of the rhythm. Its vibe is kinetic, cheerful and a little hypnotic: a twin-stick rush that suits a short evening session, a lunch break on the couch, or the moment you want to chase a high score without thinking. Pacing is brisk and escalating, with waves that build quickly and rounds that stay tight, and the emotional register is pure arcade adrenaline rather than story. Violence is constant but abstract, all cartoon-bright explosions and vanishing rocks, with no gore and no real menace. It is for players who want fast, satisfying, pick-up-and-play shooting, and for anyone who enjoys a shared split-screen run with a friend on the couch.
