The story

The residents of Malegaon look to Bollywood cinema for a much-needed escape from daily drudgery. Amateur filmmaker Nasir Shaikh gets inspired to make a film for the people of Malegaon, by the people of Malegaon. He bands together his ragtag group of friends to bring his vision to life, thereby bringing a fresh lease of life into the town.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached streets, dusty courtyards and plain daylight give way to the loud, saturated colours of homemade spectacle, so the camera keeps moving between the two worlds, catching the scrappy sets, mismatched costumes and makeshift stunts of a small Maharashtrian town at work. The sound is lively and warm, with a bouncy, cheeky score, rapid back-and-forth Hindi and Urdu banter, and the clatter of a crew improvising. The vibe is affectionate and buoyant, a comedy about passion made from very little, with a rhythm that bustles through rehearsals, arguments and set-ups before settling into moments of quiet hope. Its emotional register is generous and optimistic, following a young amateur and his friends as they turn local ambition into something the whole community can gather around. The intensity is gentle: no gore, no real danger, and only light crude humour and mild peril played for laughs. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a comfort watch, or anyone who enjoys films about the joy and chaos of making movies, especially viewers who love underdog creativity and warm community stories.
