The story

Before being extradited to Africa to stand trial, a notorious Belgian criminal is entrusted to the Marseilles police department for less than 24 hours. But the wily crook convinces bumbling policeman Emilien he's a lowly Belgian embassy employee who got railroaded by the brilliant master criminal.

What it’s like

Bright, sun-bleached Marseille: whitewashed streets, harbour glare, and the blue-tinted sheen of a souped-up taxi careening past seaside cafés, all shot in broad, saturated daylight with fast handheld pans and quick cuts. The mood is loud, goofy and high-octane, a buddy-cop caper with brisk pacing, slapstick car chases and jokey tension rather than real menace. Its people are a mismatched pair: a hapless, well-meaning policeman who keeps tripping over his own bravado and a sharp, slippery crook, and their arc is a reluctant alliance built on bickering and escalating mishaps. Violence is frequent but cartoonish, mostly crashes, shootouts and fistfights with little blood and no gore; there is some crude humour and mild sexual innuendo. It lands as frantic fun rather than dread. For people who want a loud, sunny, fast-moving comedy-action film with a French accent, a rainy-day distraction, or easygoing background energy for a lazy evening.
