The story

The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ is a dungeon-crawling shoot-'em-up that's literally a different game each and every time you play it! The randomly generated maps are built with over 11,000 unique room configurations, each populated with a nearly endless variety of enemies, items, challenges and secrets!

What it’s like

Crude, hand-drawn sprites with a grimy, scribbled texture: a child's crying face, pale bodies, bloodied tears, and rooms of mould-green and bone-grey that look like pages from a sketchbook left in a damp basement. The top-down view stays fixed while the screen fills with flickering enemies and tinted, flashing projectiles, and the music is a tense, pulsing mix of dark organ tones, tinny chiptune stings and eerie drones that rise when a boss arrives. Each run is a fresh, unpredictable descent through room after room, so the rhythm is quick and jittery, with brief lulls before a sudden swarm. The vibe is gross, darkly funny and unsettling, closer to a nightmare with the lights half on than to anything gentle. Expect frequent bloody violence, grotesque monsters and body horror imagery, with gore spraying constantly and recurring themes of religious guilt, abuse and death played for grim laughs rather than shock alone. Best suited to roguelike fans who like short, replayable runs, odd humour and grim atmosphere, and not a fit for anyone wanting something calm or light.
