The story
The Cat Lady is a single-player horror graphic adventure and the second entry in the Devil Came Through Here trilogy, following Downfall and preceding Lorelai. It is a puzzle-based adventure played entirely with the four arrow keys, so characters move left and right between scenes while the up and down keys handle interacting with the environment and inventory. Dialogue is fully voiced, and occasional dialogue choices can shift the story and its ending slightly. The game deals with mature themes including depression, suicide, murder, and illness, alongside moments of humor.
What it’s like
Grimy, low-resolution pixel rooms rendered in murky browns, sickly greens and dried-blood reds, with cramped apartments, a dingy hospital corridor and a dim, rain-slicked town that feel claustrophobic and worn down. Lighting is mostly lamp-lit and shadowy, with flickering bulbs and sudden stark frames that make the space feel unsafe. The score is sparse and eerie, built from low drones, detuned pads and the occasional clipped, unnerving sting, with fully voiced dialogue carrying much of the weight. Its vibe is bleak, unsettling and darkly wry, suited to a late night alone with the lights off, or to a stretch of focused puzzle-solving where the pacing is slow and deliberate. Violence, gore, death and suicide are present and often graphic, with bloody imagery and murder scenes, and the mood is one of dread rather than jump-scare spectacle. It is not gentle. The narrative follows a troubled woman through depression and grief, with moments of gallows humour cutting through the heaviness. It suits players who enjoy grim, character-driven point-and-click adventures and can handle mature, disturbing material.
