The story
Gene, a multi-expressional emoji, sets out on a journey to become a normal emoji.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated 3D animation in glossy primary colours, with smartphone interiors rendered as clean, candy-toned grids and apps as miniature playgrounds. The camera moves briskly through fast cuts and whip pans, so the screen rarely settles, and the soundtrack leans on bouncy pop and cheerful novelty tracks layered over slapstick gags. Its vibe is hyperactive, chirpy and goofy, the kind of loud, silly whimsy that suits a lazy weekend with kids, a sick day on the sofa, or a light background watch while tidying up. Pacing is relentless and the register is mostly broad, playful comedy with a sweet undercurrent about a misfit learning to accept who he is. Intensity is very low: there is no real violence or gore, only mild peril in chase sequences and some cartoonish threats from a villainous antagonist, and nothing frightening or sexual. It is aimed at young children and families who want unfussy, bright, silly entertainment with a gentle message about belonging.
