The story

An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled: There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally begin living. This volume follows our band of survivors on their tragic journey in search of shelter. Characters live and die as they brave a treacherous landscape littered with packs of the walking dead.

What it’s like

Stark black-and-white ink, heavy with solid blacks and grey screentone, so night scenes swallow whole panels while daylight looks flat and exposed under overcast skies. The linework is rough and densely hatched, with bodies and wilderness rendered in cramped shadow and open roads glimpsed in washed-out grey. The mood is bleak, grimy and weary: cold roadside camps, abandoned farmhouses, and the implied sound of wind through dead grass and distant moaning. Pacing alternates long quiet stretches of travel and campfire talk, where people argue, grieve and ration, with sudden bursts of close, brutal violence that arrive without warning. Expect frequent gore: bodies torn open, skulls cracked, blood drawn in full detail, and characters dying on the page, with a steady undertow of cruelty and fear rather than jump-scares. The emotional register is grim, heavy and humane, following a group slowly fraying under pressure and questioning who they still are. It suits a solitary late-night read or a stormy weekend, not a gentle evening. For readers who want apocalyptic survival drama with unflinching violence and a bleak, character-driven ache.
