The story

A heroic group of teens sheltered from the dangers of the post-apocalyptic world receive a message that inspires them to leave the safety of the only home they have ever known and embark on a cross-country journey to find the one man who can possibly save the world.

What it’s like

Washed-out daylight over cracked highways, dust hanging in the air, and overcast skies that flatten everything to ash and khaki; the look leans on handheld camera work in ruined towns and dim interiors lit by lanterns and grey window light. The palette is desaturated and grimy, with blood and rot standing out sharply against it. The score is a moody, synth-tinged pulse that swells during threats and drops away to wind and footsteps in quieter stretches. Vibe: bleak, dusty, and tense, with a steady undercurrent of dread. It suits a late-night watch with the lights off, or a binge over a couple of evenings when you want something gritty rather than cosy. Pacing is episodic and driven by encounters, with long stretches of travel punctuated by sudden, violent set pieces. Intensity is high: frequent gore, graphic zombie attacks, killings of humans, and a constant threat of death. Emotionally it is grim and often heavy, following a group of young people forced to grow hard and question what they can trust. For viewers who like survival horror with a coming-of-age spine and don't mind a relentlessly dark register.
