The story

TimeSplitters 2 is a first-person shooter that requires players to kill enemies and complete objectives using a variety of weapons and tactics in different predefined scenarios. Armour and health bars on the sides of the screen lower when the player is shot, which can be increased by walking over body armor and medical kits.

What it’s like

Bright, cartoonish and unruly, with saturated colour and exaggerated character design that sits somewhere between pulp comic and early-2000s action trailer. Levels jump across eras, from a sun-baked Egyptian tomb to a grey post-apocalyptic city, a 1930s-style noir street, and a neon-lit future, each with its own palette and hard, flat lighting. The camera is first-person and jittery under fire, with a sharp, twitchy feel in the hands and a constant hum of gunfire, shouting and wry, B-movie one-liners. The pace is fast and arcade-like: short timed objectives, quick respawns of tension, and constant bursts of movement that rarely let up. Its register is playful and irreverent, the mood more goofy than grim, though the violence is frequent, bloody and cartoonishly exaggerated, with zombies, mutants and robots falling in spurts of red. There is no gore-free option. It suits a loud, distracted evening with friends, a split-screen session on a rainy weekend, or a nostalgic replay for players who enjoy absurd time-hopping chaos and tongue-in-cheek shooting rather than something gentle or quiet.
