The story

Touhou Puppet Dance Performance is a spiritual successor to the Pokémon FireRed hack Touhou Puppet Play, involving training and collecting puppets of various Touhou characters.

What it’s like

Pixel-art overworld in the manner of a classic handheld monster-collecting RPG: small top-down towns, forest paths dappled with green, and a bright, sprite-driven palette that stays warm even when the setting turns eerie. The mood is playful and nostalgic, a gentle wander through familiar village lanes and dim woods with chiptune-style loops that repeat easily under the sound of your footsteps. Battles are turn-based and frame-by-frame readable, with cartoonish flourishes rather than anything grim, so the tension stays light. Its rhythm is unhurried: stretches of exploring and collecting broken up by short encounters, with the occasional spooky location (graveyards, a hellish stretch, a vampire's haunt) adding a flicker of atmosphere without real dread. The emotional register is wistful and cheerful, centred on a young protagonist gathering a party of quirky companions and slowly growing into a capable trainer. Violence is cartoonish and minimal, limited to stylised turn-based combat with no gore, and there is no sexual content. It suits a lazy afternoon, a comfort replay, or a low-pressure evening with a handheld, and it is for players who love Pokémon-style collecting and affectionate fan-made sprite worlds.
