The story
The 5th fighting game in the Touhou Project and 14.5th game overall.
What it’s like
Bright, cluttered 2D sprite art in saturated pastels, with busy stage backdrops of forests, villages and night skies that flash with spell-card colour, and anime-style character portraits framing each bout. The sound is an energetic stream of Touhou-style chiptune and jazzed-up arrangements, punctuated by sharp impact hits and the ticking of a countdown timer that tightens the tension in every round. Hands-on, it is quick and twitchy: short fights built on dashing, grazing and launching fireballs, with a playful, slightly chaotic energy rather than grim menace. Its vibe is bright, busy and competitive, best suited to an arcade-style session with a friend on the couch, or a quick solo bout when you want something lively rather than restful. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, all magic bursts and comic knockouts, with no gore and little threat beyond the stakes of a lost round. It suits players who enjoy fast 2D fighters, colourful fantasy casts and the playful side of bullet-hell-style spellcraft, and who want a light, crowd-pleasing fight rather than anything heavy.
