The story

Frank Martin puts the driving gloves on to deliver Valentina, the kidnapped daughter of a Ukrainian government official, from Marseilles to Odessa on the Black Sea. En route, he has to contend with thugs who want to intercept Valentina's safe delivery and not let his personal feelings get in the way of his dangerous objective.

What it’s like

Glossy, high-saturation digital images with hard sunlight on Marseille's sun-washed harbour roads, then drained steel-grey and night-blue in the Eastern European stretches, where cold industrial lots and rain-slicked highways take over. The camera stays kinetic: quick cuts, close handheld shots inside the car, and fast tracking shots that follow the black Audi through tunnels and city streets, with plenty of slow-motion when fists and bullets fly. The score is a driving electronic pulse with thudding bass, punctuated by squealing tyres and clattering gunfire, so the soundtrack never really goes quiet. Vibe: slick, loud, and relentless, the kind of film to put on for a Friday night with the lights off or as a lean-back action fix. Pacing is brisk and rarely lets up, and the emotional register is a tough, sardonic seriousness, with a stoic driver slowly warming to the young woman in his care. Intensity is high: frequent hand-to-hand fights, gunplay and car crashes, with some blood and bruising, a few deaths shown without much lingering, and a restrained romantic thread. It suits viewers who want stylish, kinetic action with a hard edge and no gentle moments.
