The story

Waterloo Road is a British television drama series set in a comprehensive school of the same name, first broadcast on BBC One on 9 March 2006, and concluding its original run on 9 March 2015. It was recommissioned in 2021, and resumed starting 9 January 2023. At the failing comprehensive school, and later academy of the same name, the professional and personal lives of the students and staff are examined. Affairs, scandals, blackmail and many, many headteachers. Who said education was easy?

What it’s like

Bright, flat fluorescent corridors, clattering lockers and institutional beige, shot in a busy, handheld-leaning digital style that cuts quickly between staffroom, classroom and car park. Its sound is pop-tinged incidental music, school bells, and raised voices over a constant hum of hallway chatter, with the rhythm of a long-running soap: sharp scene breaks, dramatic reveals at the end of episodes, and story threads that run for seasons. The mood is brisk, gossipy and earnest, more busy than bleak, with a lot of warmth in the staff-room banter and the awkwardness of teenage life. Violence is occasional and mostly scuffles, fights and bullying, with some tense moments and themes of self-harm, addiction and grief that land with real weight. Sexual content is present but mostly implied, and the emotional register swings between comedy and melodrama. It suits a weeknight watch with the sofa and a cup of tea, or a comfort binge for anyone who likes ensemble drama about a community under pressure. Best for viewers who enjoy soap-style storytelling about teachers and pupils, and who don't need quiet or restraint.
