The story

Take to the skies! Relive the action, glory and seat of the pants daring of a WWI Allied fighter pilot! You'll strafe Hun armies, bomb enemy aerodromes and match wits against deadly Aces in heart stopping dogfights, the loser going down in flames… without a parachute! More than just a simulator, Wings features genuine arcade action and an emotion packed role-playing experience. Wings is the easy to plan air combat simulation you've been waiting for… no complicated keyboard commands. Just fly and shoot!

What it’s like

Hand-painted biplanes drift over sepia-toned trenches, muddy greens and dusty ochres softened into a storybook haze, with the cartoonish but deliberate look of late-80s Amiga art. The sound is period-flavoured: propeller drone, machine-gun chatter, a clipped and slightly tinny soundtrack that loops under the cockpit view, with bursts of arcade crunch when a hit lands. Momentum comes from short, punchy sorties rather than long quiet stretches. You climb, scan the sky for a rival ace, dive on a column of troops, and limp back to the aerodrome to face the next briefing, where a small cast of pilots and a roster of comrades gives the campaign its emotional weight. Intensity is moderate: frequent gunfire and explosions, fiery crashes that end pilots' lives, and a sense of wartime peril, but no gore and no graphic bloodshed. It suits a rainy weekend with a retro itch, a nostalgic session with a controller in hand, or anyone who wants arcade thrills and a light sense of campaign drama without fussy controls. Fans of old-school flight games and pinball-style score chasing will feel right at home.
