The story

TFX (Tactical Fighter eXperiment) is a flight simulation where the player can fly with F-117A, Eurofighter 2000 or F-22 Superstar in various scenarios as a UN fighter pilot. Before the player begins his/her duty, there is a need to complete 10 training missions. Only then will the rest of the possible game modes be available. The game also contains a mission editor where the player can create his/her own missions in any of the chosen scenarios.

What it’s like

Flat-shaded polygon jets slide across low, fog-softened horizons, with hard-edged desert and grey coastal terrain rendered in chunky early-nineties 3D and a cockpit of blinking instrument panels that glow green and amber against darkness. The sound is mostly engine roar, cockpit beeps, radio chatter and the thin tick of warning tones, with a restrained electronic score that drops away once you are airborne, leaving long stretches of wind and turbine hum. The pace is deliberate and methodical: takeoffs, navigation checkpoints, careful approaches and weapons runs, with the early training missions acting as a patient introduction to the controls. Its mood is studious, cool and quietly absorbing, the feel of a late evening spent alone working through procedures and flying a plane around until it clicks. Combat is present as abstract, distant targeting and missile impacts rather than blood or gore, so the intensity is low and the tension comes from precision and concentration. It suits a slow night at the desk, a retro flight-sim itch, or anyone curious about how the genre was first built. It is for players who enjoy mastering systems and enjoy the calm rhythm of learning a machine.
