The story

Guide a group of legendary warriors on a journey through the tragic history that doomed a kingdom and drove a hero down a dark path 500 years before the events of the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 game. Defend yourself from Malos and his forces using all the fury of this refined battle system, allowing you to fight as both the artificial lifeforms known as Blades and their masters, the Drivers.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated fantasy landscapes, lush jungle canopies, sun-warmed ruins and wide vistas of rolling golden plains, all rendered in a painterly anime palette that glows in daylight and dims into rich, moody dusk. The soundtrack swells with sweeping orchestral strings, choral chants and bright percussion during battles, then softens into wistful, almost lullaby-like melodies in quieter exploration. Battles are loud and kinetic: flashy mechanical Blades unleashing elemental arts, with brief flashes of intensity, while the story turns on loyalty, grief and a fall from grace, handled with earnest emotion rather than grit. Its pacing is that of a long Japanese RPG: lengthy conversations and optional side quests alternate with bursts of fast combat, and it rewards patience with a steady build of camaraderie among its party. Violence is stylised and fairly frequent in combat but bloodless, with some dramatic deaths and tragic moments that land heavily. Best suited to fans of mech-flavoured JRPGs who enjoy a long, character-driven weekend adventure, or anyone who wants a richly detailed fantasy world to lose themselves in over many evenings.
