The story

American astronaut Emma Green must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous mission. A series about hope, humanity and how we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things.

What it’s like

Clean, bright interiors dominate Away: sterile white corridors, cool blue monitor glow, and the warm amber of a Connecticut kitchen where family life keeps going without her. The camera stays close and steady on faces, often holding on a character's stillness after a line lands, and the Mars landscapes are wide, rust-coloured and empty, shot with the hush of a place nobody has been. Music is sparse and orchestral, swelling at launches and thinning to near silence in the long quiet stretches aboard the ship. The vibe is hopeful but worried, a tender ache with a steady pulse of procedural tension. It suits a weeknight when you want to settle in and follow people working through things carefully. Intensity is moderate: there are medical emergencies, a few frightening EVA sequences, and some grief and marital strain, but no gore and little explicit violence. It is for viewers who enjoy patient character drama, a sense of competence under pressure, and the loneliness of distance measured in family phone calls.
