The story

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 brings the award-winning Battlefield gameplay to the forefront of PC gaming with best-in-class vehicular combat and unexpected "Battlefield moments." New vehicles like the ATV and a transport helicopter allow for all-new multiplayer tactics on the Battlefield. With the Frostbite-enabled Destruction 2.0 system, you can take down entire buildings and create your own fire points by blasting holes through cover. You can also compete in four-player teams in two squad-only game modes, fighting together to unlock exclusive awards and achievements. Battles are set across expansive maps, each with a different tactical focus. The game also sees the return of the B Company squad in a more mature single-player campaign.

What it’s like

Gritty, dust-choked daylight and grey-green palettes dominate, with the Frostbite engine's wrecked cityscapes and rain-slicked jungles giving every skirmish a lived-in, weathered look. Buildings collapse in huge slabs of concrete and timber, so the ground keeps changing shape around you, and the camera stays close and shaky behind the soldier's shoulder. Sound does most of the work: the crack of gunfire, the roar of helicopter rotors, rattling tank treads, and a constant undercurrent of radio chatter and jokey banter between the four soldiers of B Company. The mood is wry, blokeish and hard-edged, a mix of military grit and soldiers' gallows humour, with unexpected set-piece moments that swing from tense to absurd. The pacing is brisk and chaotic in multiplayer, steadier and more scripted in the campaign, where the squad's friendships carry the arc. Violence is constant and visually loud, with explosions, gunfire and many deaths, though it stays war-game stylised rather than gory. This suits players who want an energetic evening of camaraderie and destruction, the kind of game played with friends on a loud Friday night, and fans of squad-based action who enjoy a bit of mischief amid the carnage.
