The story

Based on the bestselling book series, this outrageous comedy tells the story of George and Harold, two overly imaginative pranksters who hypnotize their principal into thinking he’s an enthusiastic, yet dimwitted, superhero named Captain Underpants.

What it’s like

Bright, bursting primary colors and a deliberately scrappy look: crayon-textured backgrounds, comic-book panels that slide and split across the screen, and hand-drawn doodles that wobble and jitter as if a child sketched them in the margins. The sound is loud and cheerful, with bouncy music, sound effects that land like cartoon slapstick, and gags timed for quick laughs. The vibe is rambunctious, silly and warm, the kind of thing to put on for a rainy afternoon, a sleepover or a noisy family evening. The pacing is brisk and nonstop, with frequent chases, visual jokes and fourth-wall winks that keep the energy high. Its emotional register is light, with a friendship at its centre and a grown-up figure who slowly learns to loosen up. Intensity is low: there are cartoon villains, bumps, explosions and scuffles, but no real gore, and the humour leans on potty jokes and wordplay. It suits young children and families, and adults who enjoy irreverent, self-aware kids' comedy.
