The story

Start a crime syndicate from nothing, and grow it into a well-oiled money machine in City of Gangsters, a mafia management simulation game. Build speakeasies and illegal distilleries. Manage production chains and resource distribution. Smuggle goods from out of town and bribe the police to look the other way. Grow a powerful crew and keep your rivals under your thumb. Eliminate competition and rule the city. But most importantly, keep the money flowing.

What it’s like

Cool, desaturated city maps built from flat, stylised blocks, with the buildings and streets drawn in muted slate, brick and faded neon-amber accents that glow only where your own operations sit. The interface does most of the visual work: tidy ledgers, ticking production bars, little dossiers on rival bosses, and a soft, looping jazz-and-brass score that stays low under the clatter of menus. It feels like a wood-panelled back office in the 1920s, quietly absorbing a city one district at a time. Sessions are turn-based and unhurried, a rhythm of planning routes, adjusting stock, and weighing a bribe against a raid, with long stretches of calm between small crises. The mood is methodical and slightly wry, with a managerial satisfaction in watching numbers climb rather than any real sense of danger. The emotional arc is simply one of growth, a modest outfit becoming a city-wide empire. Violence is present but abstract: rival crews are eliminated through menu choices and brief, bloodless notices, with no gore and no graphic on-screen killing. It suits players who love spreadsheet-style empire building, procedural sandboxes, and a long quiet evening with a cup of coffee.
