Cult of Chucky

Directed by Don Mancini

  • horror

The story

Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica is wrongly convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family... until a string of grisly deaths occur after her psychiatrist introduces a new group therapy tool -- a "Good Guy" doll.

What it’s like

Harsh fluorescent light and sickly green institutional walls give the asylum scenes a clinical, bleached-out chill, while the later sequences sink into murky dark and sudden flashes of red. Director Don Mancini frames much of it in tight, claustrophobic compositions, with the camera lingering on doll faces and cramped corridors, and the score leans on pulsing synth stings and clanging industrial percussion that spike with every kill. The mood is brash and self-aware, a gleeful mix of horror pastiche and dark comedy, with a Halloween-season wink that suits a rowdy late-night watch with friends. Pacing is brisk and full of set-piece reveals, and the emotional core is a damaged young woman slowly learning to trust her own memory against a tide of gaslighting. Violence is frequent and graphic, with stabbings, gore and crude, bloody kills, plus some profanity and sexual innuendo, though the tone stays cartoonish rather than bleak. It is for horror fans who enjoy killer-doll mayhem, sly humour and a franchise that knows exactly how ridiculous it is.
