The story
Dark Souls III: The Ringed City is the second DLC expansion for Dark Souls III, released in March 2017. It introduces the Ringed City, a new area at the world's edge where the Age of Fire is ending. The expansion includes new environments, enemies, bosses, and items like weapons, armour, and spells. The content further explores the game's lore, focusing on the themes of decay and the cyclical nature of the world.
What it’s like
Grey-gold and bone-pale, The Ringed City moves through ruined cathedrals, drowned canals and a sky that looks like tarnished brass, lit by sickly sunlight, guttering candles and the eerie glow of crumbling stone. The camera stays locked behind a heavy, deliberate protagonist, so every hallway feels like a held breath. Sound does much of the work: long stretches of wind and distant bells, a choral hum that swells near bosses, and the clang of steel that lands with real weight. The vibe is melancholy and austere, a slow funeral march through a world that is ending, with the quiet dread of decay underneath every wrong turn. Pacing is deliberate and punishing, built around patient observation, careful retreat and hard-won progress rather than constant motion. Its intensity is high: frequent, stylised combat with grisly impalements and sudden deaths, dread more than gore, and no sexual content. It suits a late-night session alone with headphones, and it is for players who love sombre atmosphere, lore-threaded ruins and bruising, methodical challenge.
