The story
Daxter is a platformer developed by Ready at Dawn and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Released in 2006 for the PlayStation Portable (PSP), it serves as a midquel set between Jak II and Jak 3 from the Jak and Daxter series. The game follows Daxter, a comical ottsel, as he works as a pest exterminator in Haven City while searching for his captured friend, Jak. Gameplay focuses on platforming, combat, and gadget-based puzzles, with Daxter using unique tools like a bug swatter and spray gun to defeat enemies. It features detailed environments, engaging minigames, and the series' signature humor.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated cartoon color on a handheld screen: sun-warmed Haven City rooftops, sewer grates glowing green, and cheerful polygonal textures that look like a storybook drawn in crayon and clay. The sound is busy and affectionate, with bouncy orchestral-pop cues, squeaky creature chatter, and Daxter's wisecracks landing over the top of every fight. Its vibe is bright, scrappy and warm, the kind of thing that suits a commute, a long-haul flight or an easy evening on the couch with the volume low. Platforming runs in short, satisfying bursts: hop, climb, swat a bug, collect a shiny thing, then wander back for the stragglers, so it moves at a loose, unhurried tempo. Tension stays light, with cartoon combat, mild peril and no gore or real cruelty, though some slapstick scuffles can feel a bit repetitive. Its heart is a small, loyal friendship and a scrappy underdog who keeps cracking jokes, which suits players who want something gentle, funny and family-friendly that still gives them a few clever puzzles and a bit of backtracking to chew on.
