The story

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (known as Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction in most PAL countries) is a 2007 platformer video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. The game was released on October 23, 2007 in North America and on November 9, 2007 in Europe. It is the first PlayStation 3 installment for the Ratchet & Clank franchise, as well as the first installment for the "Future" series. It was also one of the first PlayStation 3 games to support DualShock 3 rumble straight from the disc. Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction was met with critical acclaim upon release. Most positive comments concerned the "engaging" and "fun" gameplay, while ost criticism was aimed at the game's technical issues. The game was nominated for several awards from gaming publications and was considered a commercial success.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated sci-fi colour everywhere: sunlit alien skies in candy blues and oranges, glossy chrome robots, and neon-lit cityscapes that pulse with energy. The camera follows a third-person character closely through lively, animated environments, with brief cinematic cutaways in which character faces and expressions carry the comedy. The soundtrack is bouncy orchestral-pop with cheerful synth flourishes, and the weapons go off with loud, satisfying booms and zings. Its vibe is playful, upbeat, and kinetic, the sort of game that feels like a Saturday-morning cartoon you can steer. Intensity is low to moderate: cartoonish combat against robots and mutants, with lots of explosions and no gore, and characters who bounce back quickly when they fall. Pacing alternates between brisk run-and-gun sections, platforming leaps, gadget-driven puzzles, and short space dogfights, with easy rewards and frequent humour. The emotional register is warm and light, with a friendship at its core. It suits a relaxed weekend afternoon, a playful evening with a partner or kids, or anyone wanting an upbeat, low-stakes escape with plenty of silly gadgets.
