The story

Follow a disillusioned teen recruited into a storied high school for assassins. Maintaining his moral code while surviving a ruthless curriculum, vicious social cliques, and his own adolescent uncertainties may prove fatal.

What it’s like

Saturated 1980s San Francisco after dark: sodium-orange streetlight pooling on wet pavement, punk-rock neon sign glow, grimy warehouse interiors and a campus of stone and brick that feels both gothic and tacky. The show leans into hand-painted comic energy, with bold color, dutch-angled close-ups, quick cuts and pop-punk and new-wave tracks that punctuate scenes like a mixtape. Its vibe is feverish, dark-funny teen melodrama with a streak of cold menace, and it suits a late-night binge when you want stylish chaos rather than calm. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with frequent bursts of violence that land hard and quick, often played for sharp, ironic humor. Gore is present and fairly frequent, with stabbings, shootings and bloody fights, plus strong language, drug use and sexual content among teens and adults. Emotionally it is restless and bruised, following an outsider trying to keep his conscience intact inside a brutal, status-obsessed system. For viewers who like rebellious, genre-blended coming-of-age stories with a sardonic edge and do not mind a high level of graphic danger.
