The story
Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance is a tactical role-playing video game. The evil demon emperor Void Dark devastates numerous Netherworlds after coming to power, with the help of an army of over one million soldiers known as The Lost. Following this, the Overlords of the Netherworlds under Void Dark's rule attempt to rise up and take revenge. The game involves the player traveling across different Netherworlds in an attempt to bring the Overlords and heirs of each different world to join forces together to fight against Void Dark. The game will feature new systems not seen within prior titles in the Disgaea series. In addition, the number of characters displayable on-screen has increased to 100, compared to 10 characters on the earlier PlayStation 3 titles.
What it’s like
Bright, cartoonish anime sprites bounce across isometric grid battlefields in saturated reds, purples and sickly greens, with bold outlines and flat, hand-drawn backdrops that shift from ruined castles to glowing underworld cities. Battles are built from sprawling, tidy turn-based formations where spell effects burst in exaggerated flashes and damage numbers pop in cheerful clusters, and the screen can fill with a hundred-plus figures at once. The soundtrack is brisk orchestral and rock, and the voiced dialogue is pure theatre, all mock-solemn speeches and goofy asides. The vibe is playful and busy, the kind of comfort-chaos suited to long evenings with a controller, background grinding while half-watching something else, or a steady session on a quiet weekend. Pacing is leisurely but punchy: story scenes run long and chatty, then give way to rounds of methodical strategy and repetitive, satisfying levelling. Its revenge-and-alliance arc is about a ragtag cast of rival lords learning to tolerate each other, with tone that leans warm, irreverent and self-mocking. Violence is constant but cartoonish, with undead foes dissolving in puffs of colour, no real gore, and crude, suggestive jokes that stay on the slapstick side. It suits fans of tactical RPGs, grinders who enjoy deep customisation, and anyone who likes their fantasy loud, silly and sweetly theatrical.
