The story
Dragon's Lair is a high-definition re-release of the classic 1983 arcade game, featuring fully remastered animation by Don Bluth. Players control Dirk the Daring, a brave knight on a quest to rescue Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe, navigating through a series of animated sequences using quick-time events. Originally notable for its use of LaserDisc technology, the game presents hand-drawn animation where players must react to on-screen prompts to survive. The remastered edition enhances the original experience with 720p HD visuals, restored game footage, and bonus content, including interviews with the game's creators.
What it’s like
Hand-drawn cartoon frames fill the screen in bright, storybook colour: a castle of stone and torchlit halls, molten orange of dragon fire against deep blue-black shadow, every figure outlined in the loose, expressive linework of 1980s animation. Motion is fluid and theatrical, with the camera swooping down corridors and across drawbridges as if a cartoon were unfolding around you. The soundtrack is a bright, bouncy orchestral-fantasy score with brass stabs and chiming flourishes, punctuated by the sharp cartoon yelps and clangs of each mishap. Sessions run in short, sharp bursts: each room is a brief test of timing, a fall or a dragon's breath ends a scene in seconds, and the rhythm is one of trial, failure and cheerful retry. The vibe is playful, nostalgic and mildly tense, a bright fairy-tale adventure with a sense of danger always just off-screen. Violence is cartoonish and non-gory, mostly deaths by fire, falls and monsters, with no blood and no sexual content, and fear is light and fleeting. Suited to a retro-minded player, someone who likes memorising patterns and wants a comic, low-gore medieval adventure to dip into in short sessions.
