The story

It's 1996 in a town called Boring, Oregon, where high school misfits in the AV and drama clubs brave the ups and downs of teenage emotions in the VHS era.

What it’s like

Warm, nostalgic and scruffy, with the grain and saturated, slightly washed-out palette of mid-1990s videotape: bedrooms lit by lamplight and CRT glow, school corridors in flat fluorescent hum, and sun-faded Oregon streets under big open skies. The camera stays close and loose, lots of handheld moments and quick cuts, and the needle-drop soundtrack of 90s alt and pop does much of the emotional work. The vibe is wry, bittersweet and affectionate, with a sitcom-like snap in the jokes that gives way to real ache when parents go missing or never really show up. Its teenagers are awkward, funny and earnest, and their arcs move through coming out, first crushes, grief and friendship that gets tested and rebuilt, shaped around a school play and a road trip. Episodes are brisk and easy to dip in and out of, suiting a lazy weekend, a comfort rewatch or a stretch of nostalgia-hunting. Language and teen sexuality appear regularly and some scenes sting, but violence is minimal and nothing is graphic, so it stays gentle in tone. It is for viewers who enjoy coming-of-age stories with humour and heart and a soft spot for the misfits.
