The story
The Vault Dweller is tasked with exploring post-nuclear California in order to retrieve a water chip to replace the broken chip of Vault 13, their home, which they are the first person to ever leave. The player will engage in Western RPG character building and turn-based tactical combat while getting to know settlements and factions of people, mutants and ghouls through branching dialogue trees.
What it’s like
Gritty, sun-bleached desert under a flat, washed-out sky: the 1997 Fallout presents its wasteland as a dusty palette of ochre, rust and bone-grey, with dithered pixel-art backdrops, muddy browns and the occasional flare of a neon sign in a ruined town. The look is static and isometric, scenes framed from above and played out as tiles and sprites, so the world reads like a faded map come to life. Sound is sparse and tinny: a dry, looping wasteland theme, the clack of a turn-based queue, Geiger-tick ambience, and long silences between gunfire and chatter. The vibe is dusty, darkly comic unease, with a wry, deadpan streak running under the dread. It suits a slow evening at the desk, a stretch of planning and wandering, or a late-night session when you want a world to poke at. Pacing is deliberate and menu-driven, with long stretches of travel and talk broken by sudden, sharp fights. Violence is frequent and often lethal, with blood, executions and drug-fuelled mayhem, though it stays stylised and bloodless in look. Dialogue is text-heavy and cynical, and the protagonist's arc is one of a sheltered outsider learning how hard and morally tangled the world outside is. Made for players who enjoy character builds, branching choices and a grim, funny world.
