The story

Welcome back to New Vegas! With the introduction of the Ultimate Edition Bethesda Softworks presents the definitive edition of Fallout: New Vegas. This complete package, which includes the Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues and Lonesome Road add-on packs, allows you to experience everything that New Vegas has to offer. To sweeten the pot, you'll be armed with the latest cache of unique weapons, ammo types and recipes from the most recent add-on packs Courier's Stash and Gun Runners Arsenal. Whether you're a seasoned explorer of the Mojave or playing the game for the first time you will find there are more friends, and enemies, to make, more consequences to be responsible for and more opportunities to live in glory, or infamy, throughout the Wasteland. The choices you make will be as influential as ever. Enjoy your stay.

What it’s like

Dusty, sun-bleached desert under a flat, merciless sky, with the Mojave rendered in washed-out ochres, rust reds and neon signs flickering against a night of deep blue. The camera stays in first or third person, so you move through ruined motels, casino floors and irradiated canyons at your own unhurried pace, and the wide empty stretches of scrub and mesa give long stretches of quiet between sudden gunfire. Sound leans on a twangy, Americana-tinged soundtrack of crooning lounge tunes and lonesome guitar, broken by the crackle of radios and the clatter of distant combat. The mood is wry, lonely and a little manic: a dark comedy about a wasteland that still plays at glamour, with consequences that linger. Violence is frequent and stylised, with gunfights and occasional gore, plus some cruelty and tense moral choices, but it stays cartoonish rather than harrowing. It suits a long evening alone with a controller, or a return trip for fans who like wandering, talking their way out of trouble, and building a character who is equal parts hero and rogue, for players who enjoy open-ended role-playing with a sardonic streak.
