The story

EA's Fight Night returns in its second installment. Once again, you can create a new boxer and start a career that begins as an amateur in a shady gym somewhere in Queens, NY and fight your way up to the top. Alternatively, you could relive the careers of some legendary boxers. Of course, you could go for a simple match with either a computer or a live opponent. Round 2 offers many new features, like fancy particle effects that show blood and sweat spraying into the camera in ultra slow-motion. The "Total Boxer Control", which lets you throw punches by making certain movements with the analog stick, has been improved. There are also many ways to customize the appearance of your character, up to the shaping of the cranium and ears. The soundtrack consists of a dozen contemporary (but unfortunately edited) hip-hop tracks.

What it’s like

Heavy, sweaty realism rendered in early-2000s polygons: a dim, grimy arena lit by hard spotlights and the flat glow of a crowd, with the camera swinging in close as a fighter's face takes a punch. Slow-motion replays freeze sweat and blood spraying toward the lens, and the cut-off hip-hop beats thud through the rounds, while the ring's stillness between exchanges gives the sound of gloves and breath room to breathe. The vibe is gritty, intense and cinematic in a loud, bruised way, with a bit of swagger on top. The pace is the rhythm of a real fight: bursts of flurries, long stretches of circling and feinting, then sudden collisions. Intensity is high and continuous: stylised but convincing violence with visible blood and bodily damage, no gore beyond the spray effects, and no sexual content. Career mode tracks a young boxer rising from a rough gym toward championship belts, a grind of humiliation and hard-won respect. It suits players who want a visceral, physical sports game with a tough-guy edge, not a gentle or relaxing one, and fans of boxing who enjoy building and customizing their own fighter from scratch.
