The story
FortressOne is a free, open source fork of the original 1996 QuakeWorld mod Team Fortress. It is a fast-paced, class based, arena first person shooter remastered with refined graphics, new mechanics and evolved gameplay.
What it’s like
Fast, bright chaos in the bounded arenas of an old-school id-style shooter: chunky low-poly maps built from brick, concrete and tiled corridors, lit by flat overhead fluorescents and flaring team-coloured lights, with rocket trails and grenade smoke cutting through the air. The look is a remastered take on 1990s software rendering, so edges stay crisp and textures sharp rather than glossy, and the palette leans on primary reds and blues against grey industrial stone. Sound is punchy and mechanical: rocket thumps, shotgun blasts, the clatter of footsteps echoing down long halls, and short synth stingers for kills and objectives, with almost no ambient score between rounds. Movement is quick and strafe-heavy, rounds are short and restart fast, so the rhythm is tense bursts followed by brief lulls. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless in tone, with exploding bodies and gibs but no real gore or cruelty, and the stakes are purely competitive. Best for people on Linux or PC who want a lively, low-stakes multiplayer shooter to drop into for an hour, or for fans of classic arena shooters and class-based team play.
