The story

Hell Pie is a single-player 3D platformer which empowers players with an extensive set of moves based on a swing mechanic and lets them explore a combination of large twisted worlds and small challenging levels. Fighting enemies, collecting weird cake ingredients and interactions with bizarre characters complement the gameplay. Our target audience are fans of old-school action-adventures and gamers who loved to play N64 classics such as Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie.

What it’s like

Bright, bulbous 3D worlds with a deliberately warped, cartoonish look, the kind of saturated, slightly grubby colour a late-night cable cartoon might use, and a bouncy, chiming soundtrack that rarely lets up. Movement is the pleasure here: a swing mechanic that lets the character lurch, arc and chain through big twisted landscapes and then tighten into small, fiddly challenge rooms, so the rhythm feels like repeated tries and sudden flow. It has the cheeky, uncouth energy of a comedy that doesn't mind being rude, with odd characters, gross-out gags and crude, suggestive humour, including nudity and sexual content that is played for laughs rather than as drama. Combat is light and cartoonish, with enemies to bop and no real sense of threat, and the overall intensity is low and goofy. Good for an evening of playful, slightly silly platforming, or for anyone who wants a chaotic, irreverent romp in the spirit of old N64 adventures, provided they're comfortable with the adult humour.
