The story
After middle school, with its bullying and nicknames, Uka Ishimori is excited for a fresh start at Hachimitsu High School. Kai Miura, a cool and uninhibited boy, sits next to her in class. Uka remembers she met Kai in middle school and with a single word, he had convinced her to attend Hachimitsu. Though he’s popular, Kai supports Uka in her efforts to fit in with her new classmates.
What it’s like
Soft, sunlit school days drawn in the bright, clean style of shoujo animation, with pastel skies, warm classroom light, and gentle character expressions that carry much of the emotion. The mood is hopeful and wistful, a fresh-start feeling in spring air, with moments of quiet awkwardness and small, warm reassurance. Pacing is unhurried and episodic, with slice-of-life scenes of lunch, hallways, and friendships given room to breathe, and the romance builds slowly through glances and easy conversation. The bullying of the past is referred to rather than shown, and the present-day story stays low in intensity: no graphic violence, no gore, and only mild, non-explicit romantic tension. Its emotional register is tender and earnest, with a coming-of-age arc about a young person learning to trust her own footing after being hurt. It suits a relaxed afternoon, a comfort watch, or an evening when you want something sweet and kind. It is for viewers who enjoy gentle, heartfelt high school stories and want warmth without cruelty or heavy stakes.
