Hostel: Part III

Directed by Scott Spiegel

The story

Set in Las Vegas, the film centers on a man who attends his best friend's bachelor party, unaware of an insidious agenda that plays into hunting humans.

What it’s like

Flat, saturated day-for-night glare and sleazy casino neon give this one a grimy, sun-scorched-then-sodium-lit look, with plenty of shaky handheld movement through crowded strip-club rooms, hotel corridors and dim warehouse interiors. The palette leans on blood reds, cheap gold and fluorescent whites, and the sound design is loud and abrasive: thumping club bass, screams cut short, metal clanging under pulsing electronic stings. Pacing is front-loaded with bachelor-party banter and then tips into long, uncomfortable stretches of captivity and cruelty, with the camera lingering on pain rather than cutting away. The vibe is leering, nihilistic and mean, the sort of late-night watch that suits someone who wants a loud, ugly sequel to play after midnight, not a comfort rewatch. Intensity is high: graphic torture and gore, sadistic violence, nudity and sexual menace, and cruelty that the story rarely pulls back from. Its people are mostly hapless men slowly realising they are prey, and the ending offers little warmth. It is for horror fans who want unflinching, nasty genre extremity and can stomach sustained brutality.
