I Spit on Your Grave III: Vengeance Is Mine

Directed by Richard Schenkman

The story

Jennifer Hills is still tormented by the brutal sexual assault she endured years ago. She’s changed identities and cities, reluctantly joining a support group where she begins to piece together a new life. But when her new friend’s murderer goes free and the tales of serial rapists haunt her, Jennifer will hunt down the men responsible and do what the system won’t – make them pay for their crimes in the most horrific ways imaginable. Only this time, no jury may be able to save her.

What it’s like

Cold, muted palette with flat daylight and drab interiors: fluorescent-lit church basements, motel rooms, and rain-dulled city streets that feel functional rather than atmospheric. The camera stays fairly conventional and the score leans on low, pulsing synth-like tension that builds during investigation scenes. The mood is bleak and grimly determined, with a sense of wounded stillness that gives way to abrupt, punishing violence. Pacing is uneven: quiet, talky stretches in the support group and among investigators alternate with lurid, extended scenes of revenge. Intensity is high and unrelenting. Sexual assault is depicted and discussed, with graphic rape and attempted rape, torture, and explicit killings that are meant to shock. The gore is prominent and the cruelty lands hard, with little relief. Emotionally it is driven by trauma, anger, and a damaged woman's fixation on justice outside the law. This is not gentle viewing. It suits viewers who want a grim, exploitation-style revenge thriller, who are comfortable with sustained brutality, and who follow the franchise for its punishing tone rather than its sympathy or warmth.
