The story

When a criminal gang of street-racing villains overtakes futuristic Monument City, you must put their driving skills and mean street machines to the ultimate test. Hot Wheels: Velocity X is a game based on Mattel's Hot Wheels line of miniature racing vehicles. In the game you have to drive one of over 30 Hot Wheels cars in race on the 3D curvilinear tracks, which include banded loops or crazy stunt launchers. During the race the weapon attacks and power-ups are available. The racing is mission-based with more than 37 missions across six levels to complete.

What it’s like

Bright, glossy toy-box colours on a futuristic city backdrop, with track surfaces that twist into looping ribbons and launch ramps against a clean sky. The look is early-2000s console polish: saturated paint jobs, chrome-edged cars, and a sense of speed carried more by motion and fast-moving scenery than by any fine detail. Sound is driven by a thumping, bass-heavy rock and electronica soundtrack, with engine roar, weapon thuds and power-up chimes punctuating every lap. The vibe is cheerful, high-energy and a little goofy, the kind of game picked up for a quick session on a weekend afternoon or an evening of solo arcade racing. Pacing is brisk: short missions, frequent restarts and a steady stream of rivals to overtake, with the stakes kept light by the toy-car premise. Rivalries are played for swagger rather than drama, and a single player's progress through the criminal street-racers reads as a simple run of escalating challenges. Violence is cartoonish, limited to vehicle weapons and crashes with no gore, and nothing here is frightening or cruel. It suits players who want an uncomplicated, bright and fast-paced racer, particularly anyone nostalgic for the Hot Wheels toys or early console racing, and those looking for something easy and undemanding to play in short bursts.
