The story
Identity V is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror computer game developed and published by NetEase company. It was released in July 2018 for mobile devices. It is free to download in App Store, Google Play and PC. Five players participate in single matches. One of them is tasked with eliminating the other four before they complete their objectives.
What it’s like
Stylised, saturated horror in which Victorian-gothic manor grounds, foggy hedgerows and decaying carnival-like sets are rendered in painted, illustrated detail, with bold colour, exaggerated character silhouettes and dramatic lighting that flares from lanterns, flashlights and sudden spotlights. The camera follows a top-down or over-the-shoulder view that keeps the map legible, so the mood comes from the shift between bright, almost fairy-tale colour and sinister stillness. The soundscape leans on creaking wood, distant bells, hushed ambient drones and sharp stingers when a chase begins, with a heartbeat-like pulse building as the hunter closes in. Matches run in tense, short bursts of hiding, sneaking and sudden pursuit, and the mobile-friendly controls make it easy to pick up for a few rounds at a time. Its vibe is theatrical, tense and playful, suited to an evening session with friends or a quick solo match during a commute. Intensity is moderate: the hunter's attacks are cartoonishly stylised rather than gory, with fear coming from chase tension and jump-scare moments instead of graphic violence, and some characters carry a flirtatious or suggestive edge. It suits players who enjoy team-versus-one cat-and-mouse games and dark fairy-tale aesthetics without heavy gore.
