The story

Resident Evil Village is a first-person survival horror game and the sequel to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The game maintains elements from previous Resident Evil games, with players having to scavenge environments for items and manage their resources. However, it adds more action-oriented gameplay, with higher enemy counts and a greater emphasis on combat.

What it’s like

Murky gothic daylight over snowbound mountains gives way to candlelit stone halls, rain-slick cobbles and sickly amber lamplight, all rendered in a dense, glossy realism that makes every surface feel wet, cold or rotten. The first-person camera stays tight over your shoulder, so the dread arrives through close, shuddering encounters and the scrape of a door you cannot see past. Sound does much of the work: a low, churning score that swells into industrial clangs, ragged breathing, and long stretches of wind and creaking timber. The vibe is gothic dark fantasy with a bruised, oppressive mood, best suited to a late night with the lights down and headphones on. Pacing alternates between tense exploration, careful scavenging and rising, noisy set-pieces where the enemy count climbs. Violence is frequent and graphic, with gore, dismemberment and grotesque creatures, and the horror leans on jump-scares and mounting pressure more than on quiet unease. Its people are hardened and wary, slowly pulled toward a troubling conspiracy. For players who want survival horror with heavy combat, crafting and gothic atmosphere, and who can handle sustained brutality.
