The story
Oleg Maddox’s world famous IL-2 Sturmovik series of flight simulators continues to expand. The latest offering, IL-2 1946, adds 36 new planes, four new gigantic maps, over a hundred new ground objects, and nearly 200 new campaign missions. This new opus also includes all of the previous Il-2 series content. What years ago began as a one-aircraft study sim is now an astonishing anthology, with a whopping 229 flyable aircraft and over 300 aircraft total! Not to mention that players will have the opportunity to get a first glance at the future of the series arriving next year: Storm of War Battle of Britain via exclusive bonus videos. IL-2 1946 includes all of the original IL-2 series content: IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles, Ace Expansion Pack, Pacific Fighters and alternate history campaigns of year 1946.
What it’s like
Hard, unforgiving sky: low grey overcast, flat Eastern Front plains, muddy airfields and smoke columns rising from burning villages, with the cockpit view and instrument panel dominating the frame. Sound does most of the work here: the drone of a piston engine rising and falling with throttle, creaking airframes, distant flak thumps, and the wind noise that swells when you dive. The 2006 polygonal models look dated now, but the world still reads as weighty and sober rather than cartoonish, and a day/night cycle shifts the palette from pale dawn haze to dark, lamp-lit runways. The pace is deliberate: long stretches of cruising and navigation punctuated by sharp, adrenaline-heavy dogfights and ground attacks. The tone is grim and procedural, with an emphasis on mastery and discipline over spectacle. Violence is present but abstract: aircraft are shot down, explosions and tracer fire fill the screen, and the pilots themselves are rarely shown, with no gore. Wartime fascism appears as historical subject matter rather than endorsed ideology. It suits players who want a thoughtful, meticulous flight sim to sink into over a long evening, especially those drawn to aviation history and rewarding, slow-earned competence.
