The story
Marissa Marcel was a film star. She made three movies. But none of the movies was ever released. And Marissa Marcel disappeared. The new game from Sam Barlow, creator of Her Story.
What it’s like
Grainy, sun-faded 1970s film stock cut against cool, clinical edit-suite greys, so the footage of a vanished actress feels both lush and clinically dissected. Most of the experience is full-motion video of actors performing in tight, carefully framed takes, with the viewer scrubbing through fragments on a mock editing rig and piecing things together in near silence broken by a restrained, dreamy score and the soft whirr of tape. The mood is slow-burn unease: a dim, obsessive investigation into a mystery that keeps shifting shape, closer to sitting alone at a desk with a box of old reels than to any kind of action. Pacing is self-directed and meditative, with long quiet stretches and sudden jolts of revelation. The emotional register is melancholy and psychological, and the intrigue centres on an enigmatic woman and the obsessions of the people around her. Intensity is low: no gore or on-screen violence, a few tense and disturbing moments, and sexual content only implied. Suited to a rainy evening, late-night solitary play, or anyone who loves puzzle-driven mysteries and cinematic, film-inspired storytelling.
