The story
Jackass Number Two is a compilation of various stunts, pranks and skits, and essentially has no plot. Chris Pontius, Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Bam Margera, and the whole crew return to the screen to raise the stakes higher than ever before.
What it’s like
Hard-cut handheld footage of a rowdy crew in bright daylight, suburban yards, parking lots and sun-bleached streets, shot with the cheap immediacy of consumer video and the odd polished set-up for a gag. The palette is saturated and flat, the sound a jumble of whoops, yelps, slapstick thuds and a snare-and-guitar punk score that stops dead for the pain. Vibe: juvenile, chaotic, cringing-with-laughter, a schoolyard that never grows up. The rhythm is brisk and episodic, a run of short bits with no story to carry them, so you can dip in and out. Emotionally it is pure goofy bravado, with wincing empathy for the men getting hurt and a relentless appetite for the grotesque. Intensity is high: frequent stunts with real physical injury, bodily fluids, vomit, excrement and gross-out sight gags, nudity and crude sexual pranks, with blood and wounds shown plainly, though the mood stays absurd rather than menacing. Not gentle, not for a calm evening. It is for people who want loud, unrepentant, gleefully disgusting stunt comedy and can laugh at other people's pain.
