Jeepers Creepers: Reborn

Directed by Timo Vuorensola

The story

Forced to travel to a horror festival with her boyfriend, a young woman begins experiencing premonitions associated with the urban myth of The Creeper. She believes that something supernatural has been summoned — and that she is at the center of it all.

What it’s like

Harsh, saturated night scenes with sickly green and rust-orange tones, the nocturnal road and rural dark punctuated by sudden headlight glare and hard flashlight beams, and a grainy, digital-raw look that feels cheap in a deliberate way. Camera work leans toward handheld jolts and quick cuts during chases, while quieter stretches of festival crowds and motel-style interiors carry fluorescent flatness. The sound design is built on screeching, clattering and sudden stings over a thin, pulsing synth-and-drone score, with long stretches of ambient dread between the scares. The mood is grim and sour, a jittery, mean-spirited slasher register that sits closer to exploitation than atmosphere, with pacing that alternates sluggish set-up with frantic, noisy bursts. Violence is frequent and graphic, with bloody kills, gore and some sexual content, and the fear is more about being hunted than suspense that builds slowly. Not gentle. This suits late-night viewing with friends who want a loud, nasty creature feature, and fans of the franchise's grisly, grim-slasher tone.
