The story

In Kerbal Space Program, take charge of the space program for the alien race known as the Kerbals. You have access to an array of parts to assemble fully-functional spacecraft that flies (or doesn’t) based on realistic aerodynamic and orbital physics. Launch your Kerbal crew into orbit and beyond (while keeping them alive) to explore moons and planets in the Kerbol solar system, constructing bases and space stations to expand the reach of your expedition.

What it’s like

Bright, cartoonish sunlight over pastel-green launch pads and rust-orange fuel tanks, with the wide blue-black dark of space opening up once the rocket clears the atmosphere. The look is clean and toy-like, all rounded shapes and saturated colour, while the view from a cockpit or a distant orbit gives a quiet, measured stillness. Sound is mostly the low roar of engines easing into the hush of a coasting craft, punctuated by soft chimes and the electronic beeps of a navigation panel. The vibe is playful but studious, a patient kind of wonder that settles in during long coasts between burns. It suits a slow weekend afternoon, a background session while thinking through a problem, or an evening alone with a cup of tea. Pacing is self-set: hours can pass planning a transfer burn or watching a lander drift toward a crater, and the sandbox has no clock forcing anything. Failure is frequent and comic rather than frightening; a wobbling rocket tumbling into the ocean earns a laugh, not dread. Violence and gore are absent, with no combat and no threatening enemies, and any tension is purely mechanical. It is for people who enjoy tinkering with systems, learning how orbits really behave, and turning trial and error into quiet, satisfying progress.
