The story

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix is an HD remastered compilation of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix. Previously exclusive to Japan, both games will be available for the first time to North America for PlayStation 3. HD remastered cinematics from Kingdom Hearts Re:coded will also be included in the compilation.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated Disney-world color meets murky, dreamlike dark: sunlit castle courtyards and pastel fairy-tale towns give way to pale blue starfields, shadowy corridors and glowing heart-shaped sparks. The camera swings and tilts through big, fluid action set-pieces, while the cinematics lean on soft-focus close-ups, slow dissolves and a sweeping orchestral score that swells into bright piano motifs during the quieter moments. Tone is earnest and wistful, with a warm, adventurous optimism that keeps brushing against lonelier undertones. Its pacing is long and episodic, punctuated by sudden boss clashes, and its young heroes grow from naive friendship toward hard-won loyalty and self-knowledge. Violence is stylised cartoon combat: brisk, bloodless and frequent, with some tense dread around the villains and darker corridors. It suits a long weekend session, a comfort replay, or a rainy afternoon with a controller, and it is made for fans of Disney, Final Fantasy-style fantasy and anyone who wants sincere, colourful adventure.
