The story

Reclusive gym manager Lou falls hard for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Las Vegas in pursuit of her dream. But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.

What it’s like

Saturated neon and sunburnt desert haze, the palette running from hot pinks and sodium-orange motel signs to the grainy green of a dim gym basement and the bruised blues of night highways. Rose Glass shoots in tight, claustrophobic frames with plenty of handheld closeness, so faces and sweat and bodies fill the screen, then cuts away to wide, empty New Mexico landscapes that feel indifferent. The sound is a pulsing synth score that thickens with dread, interrupted by sudden quiet and the hard clang of weights and gunshots. Its vibe is feverish, sticky and hot-blooded, the kind of dread that sits under a romance that feels both tender and dangerous. Pacing is restless and escalating, with long stretches of intimate tension broken by abrupt, brutal bursts of violence, including graphic killings, a disturbing body-horror sequence, and sexual content that is explicit. Its emotional register is darkly comic and raw, following two women whose connection pulls both toward self-destruction and an uneasy kind of liberation. Best for viewers who want queer noir with bite, a late-night watch rather than something gentle, and who can handle sharp, shocking violence and strong sexual content.
