The story

Mark of the Ninja is a side-scrolling action stealth video game developed by Klei Entertainment and published by Microsoft Studios. It was announced on February 28, 2012 and later released for the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live Arcade on September 7, 2012. A Microsoft Windows version was released on October 16, 2012. It follows the story of a nameless ninja in the present day, and features a themed conflict between ancient ninja tradition and modern technology. Cutscenes for the game are rendered in Saturday morning cartoon animation style.

What it’s like

Hand-painted 2D art with bold ink outlines and a limited palette of deep indigo, ember orange and bruised violet, the whole thing lit like a shadow puppet show: silhouettes sliding across lantern-warm rooms while the dark edges of the screen swallow everything you are not standing in. Light is the mechanic here, so the frame keeps pooling and cutting it, and the stillness between movements has a held, watchful quality. Sound is sparse and tense, with soft percussion, distant wind and the muffled clink of gear, and when a guard notices you the score tightens into a sharp sting. Cutscenes break the spell with jittery, Saturday-morning cartoon animation, a jarring comic note that gives the revenge story a wry edge. The mood is taut, moody and quietly playful, a stealth ritual that rewards patience. Pacing is deliberate, with bursts of fast, precise climbing and a steady loop of observing, planning and striking from shadow. Violence is stylized and mostly bloodless, with ninja kills shown as clean, brief takedowns; some scenes carry grim, unsettling tension but no gore. Good for people who want a thoughtful evening of tense, atmospheric sneaking, and for anyone who likes stylish 2D art with a dry sense of humour.
