The story

In Mega Man ZX Advent, the main characters discover the power of the mysterious "Biometal model A," which on its own has several attacks, but also has a special Megamerge ability which allows the character to transform into one of eight "Pseudoroid" bosses that each have a unique set of abilities. Once a boss is defeated, players can emulate their powers to find hidden routes, discover rare items and aid their battles against more powerful enemies. The title takes full advantage of the Nintendo DS features to enhance the action-packed gameplay and story line of the popular series.

What it’s like

Bright, hard-edged 2D sprites against sprawling, layered backdrops: ruined cityscapes and overgrown industrial zones rendered in a crisp anime palette, with the DS's two screens split between the action and a constantly shifting map. The mood is post-apocalyptic but energetic, a steady pulse of electronic rock and synth that rises into bursts of anime-style boss theatrics and bright voiced exchanges between characters. Movement is quick and fluid: wall jumps, dashes and the weight of shifting gravity keep the hands busy, and the handheld's touch controls add a tactile layer when transforming mid-fight. Intensity sits in the middle range, with fast, stylised robot combat, explosions and defeated machines but little gore and no sexual content, and fear comes mostly from tense boss rooms rather than dread. The pacing is brisk and rewarding, built on exploration loops that reward backtracking. It suits an evening of focused play, a long train ride, or fans of side-scrolling action who want a bigger, more layered take on robot-hero adventure.
