The story
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is a re-vamped and revised edition of the original Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, in which Solid Snake must recover the stolen Metal Gear Ray from a group of terrorists bent on using its power for unthinkable reasons. Along with the original espionage shooter comes a collection of 200 VR missions. Missions range from killing certain targets and using particular weapons, as well as seeing the world of Solid Snake from different perspectives and styles, with first-person target modes and a variety mode including crazy characters of different shapes and sizes. Also included are various alternative missions, ranging from the protagonist sneaking around and snapping photos of targets to bomb disposal, all out destruction, and more.
What it’s like
Rain-slick steel and fog-grey industrial interiors dominate, broken by harsh floodlights, sodium-orange corridors and the cool glow of a tactical HUD in dark rooms. Long cinematic cutscenes linger on faces and rain-streaked windows, while sparse ambient textures and tense orchestral swells give the stealth sections a taut, watchful hum. Movement is deliberate: crouching through vents, crawling along catwalks, pausing to listen, with pacing that alternates long talky stretches over radio codec calls with sudden bursts of pursuit. The mood is somber, cerebral and quietly paranoid, a slow-burning unease that rewards patience and suits a long evening alone with the lights low or a rainy weekend afternoon. Violence is frequent but mostly stylised: gunfights, close-quarters takedowns and occasional blood, with a few grim moments and no sexual content. Strong language and heavy talk of war, manipulation and identity run through the dialogue. It is for players who love stealth patience, theatrical storytelling and a melancholy, thoughtful tone.
